SUMMARY OF A MEETING WITH THE NEW SUPERINTENDET
JANUARY 11, 2007
Hello! I am writing to update you on what happened today at the meeting with the new superintendent, Dawn Chamberlin.
She did come to meet with the 4 of us today and gave each of us a chance to express our concerns.
She did listen patiently and did not sound like she had any ideas on how to solve the problems here with us.
We talked with her about Lieutenant Sohnlietner, and how everything has changed for us since she has been here. And how she has not kept one word that she gave us. The Superintendent is very much in favor of how the Lieutenant is running this unit, however we made some suggestions and she said that she would look into them and see what she can do. I asked if she would let us know her decisions. She said that when they happen is when we will know, because she does not have time to write each of us.
Here are the things that we suggested:
1) We would like to have indoor rec. time together for 2 hours. We asked for this because this is what we did have at one time, even if it was only with on of the death row inmates.
2) We asked for craft class once a week, this is something else that we used to have. We would make things that we could send to friends and family.
3) We asked for more detail work, as far as mowing grass, taking care and cleaning rec. pens, and laundry for this unit. This would also give us more freedom and time out of our cells.
4) We asked about being housed together, and she said she was not in favor of that because of security reasons. So we asked she would consider housing us with the special needs inmates instead of the ones from general population that are now with us and verbally attack us. We are willing to live with them since there is no area here that they have to house just us. Well, this was all of our requests at this meeting. So now we will just have to see what happens next, but I would like for you to follow up on this and if you have any ideas.
We also did talk about how we see the doctor and how the law library is not available to us when the Lieutenant is not here. She also said she would look into that.
Oh! They have started giving us kits when we have to clean up feces and blood. They are still not going to house us next to each other because of security reasons. That is something else we were informed of yesterday. Things have not changed with how we see the medical doctor. This is something that needs to be worked on as soon as possible. The details are the same and the verbal assaults have continued. The noise level is continuing and that is one of the reasons we asked her to house us with the special needs inmates because they at least do not verbally attack us.
I also wanted to let you know that the superintendent was very concerned about the mails she was receiving because she got reported from central office in Camphill. So, some one is reaching out and they know that people care about us.
I was very happy when she mentioned the mails and how the central office was upset that she was receiving many complaints. YAY!!!
Oh! Beth Markman and Shonda Walters also would like to be placed on the DRIVE site and be members. We all support each other and they want to make sure everyone knows that we are together in this fight.
She did also mention that she has had the e-mails blocked because she was receiving ones with viruses. All I ask is if you would continue to overload the Department of Corrections with requests to change things here. Maybe if we get enough pressure there will be a change. I thank you so much for all your help.
Carol
